Punkin Pumpkin Bath Bomb

The 2019 Halloween range from Lush is one of their best Halloween line ups yet. Several spooky and very-much-loved Halloween products have made a re-appearance as well as 2 brand-new bath bombs; Mercury Retrograde and Punkin Pumpkin.

The Punkin Pumpkin is obviously the most in-your-face-Halloween out of the 2 and as its name suggests, it is a pumpkin-shaped bath bomb that is NOT to be confused with the Pumpkin bath bomb from previous years.

Punkin Pumpkin is quite a unique bath bomb to say the least, Lush have been crazy-clever and have managed to make this bath bombs eyes and mouth glow in the dark, just as if it was a real carved pumpkin with a lit candle inside! 😮

I’m a super geek who loves a day-time-bath. Bathing in the day means I get to take advantage of the natural lighting, it’s the perfect conditions for bath art photo opportunities. The only downside to this is that I never got to experience the glow-in-the-dark aspect of the Punkin Pumpkin while in the bath. 🙁

I did however shine a torch on it for a minute or two before turning the lights off just to see if it really did glow and GLOW IT DID! Although the glow wasn’t quite as bright as the Ghost in the Dark soap (which is available again this year) it did definitely glow.

Now to get on with the science behind this magical glowing product. The first question everyone asks when introduced to such a product is, ‘HOW?!!’ You’ll have to read on to find out…

The magic glowing ingredient in Punkin Pumpkin is luminescent zinc sulfide. I was going to do a whole paragraph on the ins-and-outs of it until I remembered how bad I am at Chemistry. Instead of embarrassing myself I have included a link that sends you directly to Lush’s website where all of the ‘glowing’ information can be found *click here*.

Along side the luminescent zinc sulfide, Punkin Pumpkin also contains pumpkin powder and cinnamon-leaf, lime, orange and Sicilian-red-mandarin oils.

Its scent is very warming and a lot more limey than I had imagined prior to sniffing it. Smelling it now I want to say that it also has a slight peppery undertone to it. It’s not too in-your-face cinnamony either which is a bonus for some customers. I on the other hand would have liked it to have contained a bit more cinnamon as I can never get enough of cinnamon, especially at this time of year!

As soon as the Punkin Pumpkin bath bomb touches the water a burst of orange and green erupts from it, spilling out into the bath while it floats on the waters-surface.

Size wise Punkin Pumpkin is actually quite a chunky bath bomb, I’d say that it is almost as thick as the likes of the larger Lush bubble bars such as the Brightside and The Comforter. With this in mind I was pleasantly surprised that the bath bomb floated the whole time it was in the bath.

Once the Punkin Pumpkin bath bomb has fully dissolved it leaves your bath water a warm orange colour. The colour isn’t the only thing that makes a Punkin Pumpkin bath so wonderfully inviting either, the bath water is silky soft to the touch and just a 15 minute soak left my skin feeling much softer.

Once I was out of the bath I couldn’t help but notice how much brighter my skin appeared. As well as being brighter in appearance, it was also perfectly moisturised too.

Its fragrance although subtle, left me surprised as it remained on my skin for the best-part of the rest-of-the-day. Again in regards to its subtle scent, Punkin Pumpkin is definitely better suited to those customers who favour lighter more delicate fragrances.

Overall I am quite impressed with the Punkin Pumpkin bath bomb, I’d have personally liked to have seen it with a slightly stronger scent though. I was a little disappointed that it didn’t share its scent with the aforementioned Pumpkin bath bomb too but that’s just me being super fussy! 😝 Regardless of this, I still believe Punkin Pumpkin to be an incredible new addition to the Lush Halloween, bath-bomb-family. 🎃

Groovy Kind of Love Shower Gel from Lush

While the Groovy Kind of Love Shower Gel wasn’t the shower gel I was most excited about in Lush’s latest community release, I did really enjoy the latest edition of its bath bomb equivalent so thought it was worth giving the shower gel a go too.

The newest version of the Groovy Kind of Love bath bomb not only shares its scent with this brand new shower gel but also with the long ago, discontinued Pink Flamingo reusable bubble bar. Bright orange in colour, it wouldn’t be silly of you to mistake this shower gel for Easter 2017’s Wash Behind Your Ears shower gel.

While it looks similar to Wash Behind your Ears, the Groovy Kind of Love shower gel is that little bit brighter of an orange. It doesn’t glow quite in the same was as the Calacas shower gel but it does positively beam warm-orange-happiness and sweet-summer vibes!

One of my favourite of all ingredients that Lush frequently use in some of their products is bergamot oil, one of my favourite bergamot based products being the Dragon’s Egg bath bomb. Bergamots scent is much like an orange and lime combined and is often described as ‘sunshine in a bottle’. Making it fit right in with my visual interpretation of the shower gels sunshine-summery colour.

The Groovy Kind of Love shower gel contains bergamot, ylang ylang, rosewood oil and fresh orange juice. Its scent is sweet, fruity and oozes happiness.

Its scent is not quite as bergamoty as I’d have liked but it isn’t a scent that is at all unpleasant. For a citrusy scent it’s quite gentle and therefore may appeal to others that prefer the fruity scents that are less in-your-face and more subtle.

Consistency wise the Groovy Kind of Love shower gel is just how I like it, not so thick that you can hardly get it out of the bottle and not too thin that you lose it all at the slightest tip of the bottle. A little amount of the shower gel goes a VERY LONG way and it lathers up quickly and efficiently.

Its scent once in the shower does intensify ever so slightly but again it’s still a rather subtle scent. I find it quite hydrating on the skin too, it’s almost more of a shower cream than a shower gel in my personal opinion. I must admit its scent didn’t last that long on my skin once out of the shower but I was left feeling clean and fresh.

Overall I can see why Lush decided to expand the Groovy Kind of Love scented products collection, while it’s not a scent I have fallen deeply in love with I can see it appealing to those that do enjoy the less intense scents.

Kitsune Bath Bomb from Lush

Kitsune Bath Bomb

The Kitsune Bath Bomb was 1 of the 6 Lush Japan, exclusive bath bombs that were available to purchase in very limited amounts at the 2018 Lush Showcase; Each of the 6 bath bombs were sold for one hour only over the 2 day event.

Fortunately, Kitsune is now readily available online and in Lush stores that have chosen to stock it as a part of the 30 years-of-bath-bombs celebrations. For anyone out of the loop, thirty years ago the bath bomb was invented by Mrs Lush (AKA Mo Constantine) in her garden shed. A very happy 30th birthday to the bath bomb!

Containing Sicilian red Mandarin, patchouli and benzoin resinoid the Kitsune bath bomb has many great qualities. Its scent is packed full of energy, I’d describe it as a warmer version of the Avobath bath bomb. It seems to have the same citrus-punch as the aforementioned bath bomb it however has a much warmer fragrance-layer because of the benzoin resinoid.

This makes it a great bath bomb to use if you are like me and live with chronic pain, the benzoin resinoid mixed with the patchouli stimulates your blood flow which helps you wind down and relax, relieving any tired and achy muscles as you lay back and enjoy Kitsune’s waters.

When I first see the Kitsune bath bomb piled high at the 2018 Lush Showcase I thought it was a sea shell design, I was getting beach and mermaid vibes and it had me so, so excited. I was however wrong; Flip the Kitsune bath bomb the other way and it is actually a foxes head.

May I add without eyes – which isn’t a bad thing as I do find myself getting attached to all of the Lush products with eyes… Not ideal when you’re all waiting for a review!

I now know after 10 or so minutes of research, that ‘Kitsune’ is the Japanese word for Fox. The Kitsune in particular is a mythical, 9 tailed fox that commonly features in Japanese folklore. As soon as I realised the 2 pointy bits on the bomb were in fact fox ears I couldn’t wait to see how it performed in the bath.

As soon as the Kitsune bath bomb touches the water an explosion of foam bursts out of it. Shimmery gold, pastel reds, oranges and yellows erupts from within. Next, the Kitsune bath bombs magic truly begins. As most bath bombs do, Kitsune bobs around the waters surface slowly spinning. The photo below does this bath bomb no justice at all, you really have to try it to appreciate how much of a performance it puts on.

As Kitsune spins in the water, gold and pastel yellow lines seem to appear, this is what Lush meant when they described Kitsune as a ‘shapeshifter’ (something the Kitsune from Japanese folklore can do.)

The magic of a Kitsune fox is displayed so cleverly in this bath bomb, I always say that the Lava Lamp bath bomb is the cleverest bath bomb design and concept but Kitsune is just as good! Who knew that a bath bomb could tell you a story and so vividly?

As Kitsune is quite the fast fizzer you don’t have to wait very long for its spectacular show to be over allowing you to lay back and relax in its even more spectacular waters. The Kitsune bath bomb leaves your skin silky smooth with a tiny splash of beautiful, natural shimmer.

The Lush website claims that you’ll rise out of a Kitsune bath ‘wiser and clearer of mind’ and I really, really believe that you do. Its scent is so zingy and warming and can still be detected on your skin hours and hours after using it. It’s a very hydrating bath bomb too. I’d love to see this scent feature in other product formats in the future.

Overall I would say that Kitsune was my favourite of the Showcase 2018 Japan exclusives. Lush were kind enough to send me one out as a random act of kindness earlier this week and I cannot wait to share another bath with it. Maybe I’ll get better photos of the Kitsune ‘shape shifting’ the next time I use it, watch this space! 👀
