Magic Potion Bath Bomb from Lush (2024)

I wasn’t at all surprised to see that the Magic Potion Bath Bomb had returned for Lush’s Halloween 2024 line. 

Last year it was the first of the new Halloween products that I tried, its scent, bath art and how detailed its design was, had me under a magic spell. I’d go as far as to say that it was one of my favourite bath bombs from Lush in 2023.

What I didn’t realise until I had this year’s Magic Potion bath bomb in my possession is that 2023’s Magic Potion bath bomb had a completely different scent, Lush changed it?!?!!

I must admit I was a little disappointed with the sudden change in scent BUT Lush sent me one of the 2024 versions to try so I decided to attempt to look past the scent change.

Like the old Magic Potion bath bomb, this new version of it, still contains plenty of popping candy, ylang ylang oil, dragon fruit powder and nettle powder. At the time of writing this review (according to Lush’s website) Lush have replaced the bergamot oil and jasmine absolute with clove bud oil.

Instead of sharing its scent with my beloved and much missed Northern Lights bath bomb it now shares its scent with the Yog Nog bath bomb.

I still haven’t forgiven Lush for not re-releasing the Northern Lights bath bomb after its last run in the Christmas 2016 line so was really happy with last year’s version of the Magic Potion bath bomb.

I’m always honest in my reviews and I’ll admit right now that at the point of unboxing this bath bomb I was scratching my head wondering if Lush had made a huge mistake in changing this bath bombs scent.

The Magic Potion bath bomb still looks the same as last year’s version, the only real difference is its scent.

If you have a sweet tooth and love Christmassy scented baked goods, then you’ll be a fan of anything that Lush produces in the Yog Nog scent. Lush have really pushed foody, sweet treat scents this year, so I imagine this is why the Magic Potion had a scent change.

Magic Potions new scent makes me think of hot-sticky-toffee pudding, custard and cinnamon sugar, it’s delicious but… I hate to mention it again, I just really loved last year’s version. We’ve had so many Yog Nog scented items over the years but very few with the Northern Lights scent.

But let’s get back to reviewing this new version of the Magic Potion bath bomb as that’s what I’m here to do!

Each bath bomb is approximately 120g each so a little heavier than last years.

As soon as the Magic Potion bath bomb touches the water you are greeted with a burst of pink, blue, purple and turquoise foam, as well as snap, crackle and pops from the popping candy.

The Magic Potion bath bomb is also lightly decorated with golden shimmer, and it isn’t long until that golden shimmer starts to glide into your bath water too.

I know I say this in almost every bath bomb review but the bath art photos in this review do the Magic Potion bath bomb no justice at all, the bath art potential is so much better than I show here in this review.

The Magic Potion bath bomb takes approximately 10 minutes to fully dissolve, leaving you with plenty of time to sit back and enjoy the colourful show that it puts on.

I found the purple waters left behind by the 2024 version of the Magic Potion bath bomb to be a little duller than the previous version, BUT the waters were still silky soft.

Its scent can still be detected on your skin a few hours after getting out of the bath too which is always a plus. I do like the Yog Nog scent but know it is normally either a clear hit or clear miss for customers – no in-between.

I really LOVE this bath bomb, it’s colourful, beautiful and perfect for the Halloween season BUT (I hate to sound like a broken record) I just don’t know whether the scent change was necessary.

I’d have probably enjoyed this bath bomb more if it was made into a different shaped Magic Potion bottle, or even had different colours, that way I’d stop comparing as much, I’m sorry, I just can’t seem to let go of 2023’s version!

Frankenstein Bath Bomb from Lush

The Frankenstein Bath Bomb is a brand-new product from Lush’s 2024 Halloween line. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re likely to recognise the bath bomb immediately as a Frankenstein-themed-item.

What a lot of people don’t know is that Frankenstein isn’t the name of the monster, it is the name of the scientist who created the monster, Victor Frankenstein! Everything you see around Halloween that’s Frankenstein themed is all based on a book written by Mary Shelley in 1818…

This bath bomb is designed to look just like the monster did in what I believe was the first film adaptation of the book. Since, most other adaptations of the monster from the book (including this Lush bath bomb) have had a similar look.

The Frankenstein bath bomb is a cartoonish version of Frankenstein’s monster; It is in the shape of the monster’s face. It is mostly green has a flat, black and very buzz-cut looking, short haircut.

There are also a lot of little details such as its exaggerated facial features. It has big sunken in yellow eyes, bolts in his head and an intense and very grumpy looking frown upon his face.

Each Frankenstein bath bomb is approximately 130g each fitting snuggly in my hand. It was the first of the brand new Halloween bath bombs that I tried.

Frankenstein’s fragrance is a brand new Lush-scent-family and one I am very excited about. Each bath bomb contains galbanum oil, pine oil, geranium oil and fir balsam resinoid.

It has a fresh, green fragrance with a delicate floral undertone. It’s crisp, woody and just smells super clean and refreshing. It’s not as forest-like as the likes of the Guardian of the Forest bath bomb, it’s sweeter and has an almost balsamic richness to it, it’s incredibly moreish.

I hope this isn’t the only product Lush decide to use this scent-family for as I can see it working well as a shower gel or perfume too.

As soon as the Frankenstein bath bomb touches the water there is a huge hiss followed by an explosion of green foam. It’s refreshing, natural scent takes over your bathroom as it slowly dissolves away.

The black ‘hair’ part of the bath bomb appears to dissolve more slowly than the rest, but I think the reason behind this is, where the ‘hair’ is, is only a thin coating of black, it being green underneath.

After just a couple of minutes the water reaches the bath bombs yellow eyes, it starts to spin, as you can see in the photo below it kind of looks like the monster is shooting yellow laser beams from its eyes!

Eventually the water takes over the whole of the bath bomb and all the monster’s features melt away. You are left with bright green bath water decorated with lighter green and black bubbles as shown in the photo below.

The Frankenstein bath bomb is a reasonably slow dissolver taking 12 minutes in total to completely disappear.

The water underneath the bath art is such a bright green it almost glows, I don’t think we’ve seen a bath bomb produce green water as bright as this since the 2016 version of the So White bath bomb.

I thoroughly enjoyed using the Frankenstein bath bomb. I find it a little crazy that a book written so long ago still has such a heavy influence on Halloween and all things spooky.

The scent doesn’t last for very long on my skin once I have got out of the bath, but my skin does feel softer and appears much brighter too.

I’m hoping that this bath bomb isn’t the last we see of this new Lush-scent-family as it’s so unique to everything else Lush currently have on offer. I believe this scent would very easily fit into the Spring season too!

Pumpkin Patch Bath Bomb from Lush

The Pumpkin Patch Bath Bomb is a brand-new product that (at the time of writing this review) was only available as an exclusive item in October 2023’s Lush Kitchen Subscription Box. Whether or not it will be available in the future elsewhere is a question you’ll have to ask Lush.

The Pumpkin Patch bath bomb is an orange pumpkin that has been designed to look like the typical carved-Halloween-pumpkin but with a pirate twist, one eye is covered by a patch. Its name, the fact it is a pumpkin, and the eye patch are a (typical of Lush) very clever pun.

This year’s Halloween line is incredible, I could see this bath bomb selling extremely well alongside all of the other 2023 Halloween stock.

The Pumpkin Patch bath bomb contains grapefruit oil, juniper berry oil, lime oil and organic pumpkin seed oil and shares its scent with several best-selling Halloween Lush products such as the Sparkly Pumpkin bubble bar and 2 products that are available from this year’s Halloween line (2023) the Sparkly Pumpkin shower slime and Pumpkin Crumble bubble bar.

Before now, the Sparkly Pumpkin Lush-scent-family had only ever featured in a soap and body spray format (as well as the above-mentioned bubble bar and shower slimes) so getting it in a bath bomb format was a dream come true for some.

To look at, the Pumpkin Patch bath bomb has a very similar finish to the likes of the Gold Rabbit, Rose Gold, Partridge in a Pear Tree, and Lucky Tiger bath bombs, covered in an orangey golden shimmer.

The Pumpkin Patch bath bomb’s scent is delicious. It has a slightly spicy element to it as well as a kick of citrus from the grapefruit oil. Each of the bath bomb’s ingredients mixes with each other perfectly, softening one aspect of it while strengthening another.

Although I do not drink anything with caffeine in, I have been told by someone who does, that the Pumpkin Patch bath bomb smells very similar to the spices used in a pumpkin spiced latte.

Pumpkin Patch is a good-sized bath bomb, it’s similar in size to the standard Lush bath bombs, fitting snuggly in my hand.

As soon as the Pumpkin Patch bath bomb touches the water you are greeted with a burst of bright orange foam.

The Pumpkin Patch bath bomb’s orangey golden shimmer also starts to glide into your bath water almost immediately too.

I know I say this in almost every bath bomb review but the photos in this review do the Pumpkin Patch bath bomb no justice at all.

Its bath art is very similar to the bath art created by both the Orange Pop and Christmas Sweater bath bomb. The orange and red swirls seem to go on forever.

The Pumpkin Patch bath bomb takes approximately 15 minutes to fully dissolve, leaving you with plenty of time to sit back and enjoy the pretty red and orange show that it puts on.

I found the bright orange waters left behind by the Pumpkin Patch bath bomb exceptionally hydrating and smooth to the touch. The amount of shimmer in it also left me mesmerised.

Its scent although subtle, can still be detected on your skin long after getting out of the bath. My skin was also still silky smooth for the whole rest of the next day too.

I adore the Pumpkin Patch bath bomb, why it wasn’t a part of the in-store Lush Halloween line is a mystery to me as it really makes for the perfect, pumpkin-spiced Halloween bath!
